September 2024

Dear Families,

This month, we're diving deep into social-emotional learning with our students. We’re using Conscious Discipline to teach breathing techniques that help kids calm down and stay focused. You might hear your child talk about BalloonStar, or Pretzel breathing at home—ask them to show you how they do it! We're also working on our Wish Well practice, where students send positive thoughts to friends who might be having a tough day. These tools are helping us build a kinder, more supportive school environment where everyone can thrive. As always, we love partnering with you in this journey! We hope you will join us to learn more at our Social Emotional Learning Night September 26th!

Warmest Wishes,

Kimberly Powell and Carre Potis

We cordially invite you to our first Family Night of the year! On September 26th, from 5pm - 6:30pm, we are holding an SEL (Social-Emotional Learning) Family Night, a Title I sponsored event. We will have arts and crafts, including note-writing and coloring; a photo booth, and more! We will also provide resources centered around the SEL learning we do here at West Hills, including community resources and teaching social-emotional techniques that you can use at home. Food is being provided by Child Nutrition Services. Come on down, say hi to your child’s teacher, and have some fun to start the school year!

Social Emotional Survey for Students

Bremerton School District is committed to supporting the social, emotional, and behavioral health of students. The insights gathered from SEL surveys are invaluable to school staff, as they help to better understand students' emotional well-being and social interactions. This data plays a crucial role in creating supportive environments and targeted interventions that foster student success. This information will help schools and staff understand the needs of students at both the individual and school level.

Families who wish to opt out of the SEL survey, should contact their child's homeroom teacher or counselor to express this decision. The teacher or counselor will guide them through the opt-out process and ensure the student is excluded from the survey. It is important for families to communicate their request before the survey is administered to ensure it is processed in time.
